STUDENTS from South Thames College in Wandsworth have been given a taste of retail life with six week’s work experience at luxury delicatessen Bayley & Sage.
Six business students from the college worked on the shop floor alongside experienced staff at the premium grocer’s stores in Wandsworth, Kensington, Fulham and Wimbledon. Employability Co-ordinator Victor Dada said the students have had training and mentoring to build and develop new skills in communication, sales, customer service and merchandising.
“While working at their individual placements the students have also gained an in-depth knowledge around premium products, seasonal produce, personalised shopping, assisting customers, product display, understand the importance of the disposal of food waste according to the food safety standards, packing groceries and so much more,” he said.
“Some of the learners have said that they have had an amazing time working at Bayley & Sage and have grown in confidence and self-esteem.”
Level 2 BTEC student Nikkie Okyere said the experience has been valuable. “I had a great time and really enjoyed learning new skills, such as working on the till, organising shelves using the FIFO method, and assisting with deliveries,” she said. “The team were very welcoming and supportive, which made the experience even better.”
She did so well on her work experience she has recently been offered a part-time job.
Said Victor: “The six weeks has been excellent for our students, they thoroughly enjoyed taking part. “We’d like to extend a special thanks to Adriana Zecheru and Jess Withington at Bayley & Sage for their amazing support and contribution in coordinating this programme.”
